KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Professor Simon Beecham

Simon Beecham is currently Professor of Sustainable Water Resources Engineering at the University of South Australia. He has worked at the forefront of international research into water resources management since 1986. During the last twenty years, he has made significant contributions to the understanding of urban drainage hydraulics and more recently total water cycle management and water sensitive urban design.

Simon is author of the Syfon Model, which was used to design the Roofwater Harvesting System at the Sydney Olympic (Telstra) Stadium as well as the airport terminal roof drainage systems at Hong Kong (Chek Lap Kok), Sydney and Adelaide. Following this work he was appointed Chair of the Standards Australian committee charged with developing one of the world's first standards on siphonic roof drainage.

In addition to writing the Syfon program, Prof. Beecham is also author of the SWITCH and Switch2 water sensitive urban design (WSUD) software packages which are recommended in Engineers Australia's Australian Runoff Quality (ARQ) Manual. Switch2, which was developed as part of a research project involving industry partner Sydney Water Corporation, models total water cycle management in residential, commercial and industrial developments.

Since 1998, Simon has been Engineers Australia's representative on the IWA/IAHR's International Group on Urban Rainfall.

Professor John Pigram

Professor John Pigram is Adjunct Professor with the School of Environmental and Rural Sciences at the University of New England, Armidale, Australia. He was a Member of the Board of Governors of the World Water Council from its inception in 1996 until 2006 and was President, 2001-2003, of the International Water Resources Association.

Professor Pigram was Director of the Centre for Water Policy Research at the University of New England from 1987 to 2001 and has over 40 years experience in research, teaching and administration in water policy and management in Australia and internationally. His book, 'Australia's Water Resources: From Use to Management' was published by CSIRO in 2006 and reprinted in 2007.

PLENARY SPEAKERS

James Lenhart

Jim is a professional Agricultural and Environmental Engineer with over 20 years of experience in consultingengineering and research and development. He has an array of skills including training in agricultural sciences, participation in original research into soils and water chemistry, training in engineering and experience as an engineering designer in water resources.

As one of the founders of Stormwater Management Inc. Jim Lenhart led the design efforts of the StormFilter and StormScreen since its inception. In his capacity as Chief Technology Officer with CONTECH Stormwater Solutions, Jim directs the R&D, Product Evaluation and Regulatory Services departments. Some of his specific experiences include research on zeolite turf filters, the design of storm systems and water quality treatment facilities for major roadways and industrial developments and the statistical and physical modeling of hydrologic processes. Jim has authored over 20 papers on the subject of water quality and stormwater treatment.

His strong technical background is demonstrated as an adjunct instructor of Civil Engineering at Portland State University where he taught hydrology, hydraulics and water resources engineering. Jim currently is an active member of the Water Environment Research Foundation, ASCE and serves as a board member of the New Jersey Corporation for Advanced Technology.

WORKSHOP PRESENTERS

Grant Witheridge

Workshops:
Natural Channel Design - Half Day
Creek Erosion - Half Day

Grant Witheridge is a Civil Engineer with both Bachelor and Masters degrees from the University of NSW. He has some 27 years experience in the fields of hydraulics, creek engineering and erosion & sediment control during which time he has worked for the NSW Public Works Department, the University of NSW, Brisbane City Council and Griffith University. Currently Grant works through his own company Catchments & Creeks Pty Ltd while continuing to lecture part time at Griffith University.

Grant is the principle author of publications such as Brisbane City Council's - Natural Channel Design Guidelines, Creek Erosion Guidelines, Instream Sediment Control Guidelines and Sediment Basin Design Guidelines plus the National Guidelines on Fish passage Requirements for Waterway Crossings.

Rick Morse

Workshop:
Blue Book - Full Day

Rick Morse was a Director and principal environmental scientist with Morse McVey & Associates Pty Ltd in New South Wales from 1990 until August 2007 when he retired. He continues to consult part-time to his former business now known as SEEC Morse McVey. He holds a degree in science and diploma in agriculture.

Rick has considerable experience in assessing constraints to development, appraising the effects of development on the environment and preparing plans for the control of soil erosion and stormwater pollution. Much of his work is on difficult or contentious sites.

Being noted for identification of cost-effective, practical measures that satisfy the needs of both his clients and consent authorities, Rick became the principal author of the NSW government's guidelines for erosion and sediment control on construction sites, Managing Urban Stormwater: Soils and Construction, now widely accepted and used throughout eastern Australia and NSW in particular. Jointly with Landcom, Rick won IECA's prestigious Environmental Achievement Award for this text in 2007.

Rod Wiese

Workshop:
Water Sensitive Urban Design - Half Day

Rod Wiese, B Eng - Civil (Hons), MBA (pending), Principal of STORM_Consulting Pty Ltd (STORM) - a boutique engineering company with 4 offices in NSW and one in Victoria. Rod has 16 years experience as a Civil/Environmental Engineer with positions ranging from State government to consulting and is currently Managing Director of STORM. Rod's experience in the industry has lead to expertise in water engineering particularly stormwater. Throughout his career Rod has consistently been at the forefront of design and specification of constructed wetland and stream management systems and has and authored the design sections of the Constructed Wetlands Manual (DLWC 1998) which are regarded as a major contribution to industry best practice standards.

Rod consults to Melbourne Water under the Lower Yarra Stormwater Quality Program and the Living Rivers Programs which are aimed at local government and improving the water quality in the Yarra River. Rod's appointment to these panels involves engineering and capacity building solutions to projects where a sound understanding WSUD, especially complex retrofits, is required.

More recently Rod has focused on Integrated Water Cycle Management including stormwater harvesting for re-use. Expertise in this area has led to key appointments such as development and presentation of Clearwater's of capacity building Stormwater Reuse Module which is to be presented throughout Victoria in the next 12 months to local government, land managers and consultants.
