Environmental Awareness

GEMS Pty Limited have written a number of general and specific environmental training programs for local councils throughout NSW. We have also developed some specialist industrial programs for the building, construction and automotive repair industries as well.

Our general Local Government Courses include:
  • Minimising the Environmental Impact of Local Council Operational Activities;
  • Stormwater Management on Council Jobsites;
  • Waste Management and Minimisation on Council Jobsites.
The Specialist Courses include:
  • The POEO Act (1997);
  • Auditing Council Jobsites;
  • Using the Litter Laws as an Environmental Management Tool.
Elements of each of our general and specialist training courses can be incorporated into a course designed specifically to meet the needs of our clients.

Over the past few years GEMS Pty Limited have offered their basic environmental training program to more than 4,500 council staff and management throughout the state.

In order to measure success of our training programs we require all participants to complete an evaluation at the conclusion of the training session. These evaluations indicate that our training programs have made a significant difference to the environmental management practices of those councils who have been involved. Follow up discussions with all council contact officers have supported this view. Some of the achievements identified through the evaluation sheets and follow up discussions include:
  • more than 99% of all participants found the course to be "very relevant" or "relevant" to their everyday work;
  • more than 99% of participants have a better understanding of what their responsibilities are in relation to the environmental laws;
  • around 98% of the participants found the courses to be "practical enough";
  • more than 98% of participants found the format of the course to be "excellent" or "satisfactory";
  • around 95% of participants said the course would help them minimise the environmental impact of their work;
  • around 80% of participants nominated a practice or specific action they would change as a result of completing the training course. These are excellent results.
